14th Jan Gatwick FC 2 - Bar Mooch 7

This score line flatters them but they did deserve to win.  Add to the goals a penalty and an own goal and that leaves us at 5 - 2 (or even 4 - 2) which would have been a fair result.  I think fitness let us down at the end as we were only 2 nil down at half time but with 20 minutes remaining I think that that showed as they totally controlled midfield and inflicted wave upon wave of attacks on to our defence.  They had far to much time on the ball, were able to pass it around and also run at us.  We have to compete in midfield with this type of opposition.  Having said that we didn’t play badly it was just they were fitter and used the ball more effectively than us and we didn't close them down.  Occasionally we have a tendency to be pulled out of position which we need to be aware of.  Oli got Man of the Match award after his good work and display in defence.  Well done also to Tony who played well in goal.  Back in the league this week which I think we are all looking forward to - to finally not play any more cup games.  We need some points though!

17th Dec Gatwick 1 v Crawley Toon 2

This was quite a close game but I think they edged it because we tired towards the end when they scored their final goal.  Its annoying to be leading at half time by the penalty after good work from Jay and Stu in finding me with a good ball only to be hacked down to get the spot kick, but I think they deserved their equalizer in the 2nd half.  We played well with 10 men and then with 11 when Matt came along (Still ill but showed up anyway!)  That’s commitment not like some people who dropped out on the day!  Also thanks to Matt’s Dad who went in goal and also did well but I think it was fitness at the end and Matt, Stu, Kuz and myself all carrying injuries (two of them self inflicted by drink!) that got the better of us – we just tired.  Having said that we did play well passing the ball nicely around the pitch and making space.  I thought the defence did well – Kuz and Paul defending well in the centre with a good partnership and because of this, Gary has awarded his Man of the Match to Paul.  Now the League, in their wisdom, has decided that this competition (the Marion Freight) will now no longer have a home and away system of games in each group (due to cancelled games because of the weather).  So if you have already played the team twice in this competition the League will take the first result meaning that when we played Crawley Toon before in this group they will take that result and not yesterdays!  We won that game so that result stands which means yesterday counted for nothing – it was almost like a friendly!  Glad we beat them before and they take that as the result!

Have a good Christmas and New year and we will meet in January for the annual mid season drink up!  Next game 07/01/07!

19th November 2006 - Gatwick FC 8 v Hurstpierpoint Hasbeens 3 (KO Cup)

Another small building brick in the wall that is the 2006/07 season. Last couple of games we have started to turn things around and it is a sign on how this team is developing…….finally. if we are honest the first 10 minutes of this game we were pretty poor yet we found ourselves 2-0 up. 2 great finishes from jay and chappers doing the damage for us. however they kept getting themselves back into it through us totally switching off. Its not very often we are leading and I don’t know if this was us taking it easy or being big time Charlies but its something we cannot repeat. Matt gave us a 4-2 lead at half time and I think its safe to say despite the score we were all pretty disappointed with the way we had played (how often do we ever say that), this can only be a good sign that we are now striving for more. In the second half however it was a total canter. The oppo could just not handle the pace we now have in the side as well as some great football we were coming up with. Good to see when a move consists of 5 or 6 players all touching the ball. Their late, late free kick took a slight gloss off the result but overall a top second half and a thoroughly deserved result. The road to Redhill DVD started here in the picturesque surrounding of Poundhill. Big thanks to Rishi for stepping in-between the sticks and also some strong performances from Matt (sign him up), chappers and Stu. However the MOM this week goes to Jaylo for grabbing 4 goals. Also possibly the only man who can start on the ref when we are 8-2 up. Good entertainment value.

One moan again is that if you a playing Sunday you need to bring your money as they club is losing funds fast! Sort it out!

Big games this week again. C’mon!

Matt

12th November 2006 - Gatwick FC 5 v Crawley Toon 2

A couple of games a season we play like we did yesterday and it shows just how good we can actually be. 4-0 against a div 1 side last year also springs to mind as a performance where everyone contributed. After a shaky first 10 minutes we got hold of the ball and really knocked it about with same aplomb. Was good to see us using the full width of the pitch with both Stu and Chappers running at their dyer full backs. I also though that Jaylo and Matt upfront really combined well and look a good partnership (if we can collar Matt to sign on. Chappers get on the case). At 3-0 we were cruising then a school girl error from myself let them back in it and we had to build once more. Again second half we didn’t start great and to be fair to them the scored a good second goal. But full credit to us we showed some character and got a 4th right away and they really meant the game was over. Adding a good 5th was the icing on the cake and it was good to see us dominate a game and take our chance. I must also mention the defending of corners as this seems to have come on leaps and bounds. Seems like everyone now knows their job and it was good see. With regards to man of the match there were many good performances. Special mentions go to matt upfront for his endless running and good link up play, Jaylo for being involved in most things going forward and finally finding the art of passing the ball and finally to Garth who totally dominated their very good midfield. But MOM for setting the tone early doors and not missing a thing all day goes to Kuz. Good consistent performances this year but yesterday it was a faultless display.

Scorers: Matt Jaylo 2 Stu and 1 OG

22nd October 2006 - Gatwick FC 1 v Crawley Toon 2

Close game and a draw I think would have been a fair result.  It’s ironic that I think we played better in the second half and yet had more chances on goal in the 1st half!  It’s a funny old game!  I guess when games are this close we have to learn to take our chances – Tick, Craig and myself all had chances that could have changed the game but the two they scored, I think its fair to say, were avoidable.  Just a lack in concentration and left them unmarked resulted in their two goals in the 1st half.  We really showed character in the 2nd and you could see by their reaction at the final whistle that they were relieved to win 2 – 1.  We fought back and scored a great goal through Jay and looked like getting a deserved equaliser but this was not the case despite being the better team in that half.  Close game we showed character in the 2nd half and man of the match goes to Matt.

15th October 2006 - Gatwick FC 9 v Haywards Heath 6

This was certainly a random game.  Looking at the two halves separately I think that is a clear reflection of the game.  We were 5 – 2 up at half time and deserved to be, totally outplaying and outclassing them – could have been 9 goals at that stage.  And in the 2nd half we drew 4 – 4, which I also think is a fair reflection and result of that half.  We played some very nice football for about the 1st 60 minutes and at 6 – 2 up we looked very comfortable.  We took our chances well (before this we hadn’t scored for 2 games – saving them up for this match!) and passed it around very comfortably – some great moves throughout midfield and the rest of the team.  However, it all changed I guess round about when Zane went off and they took advantage of our tiring legs in midfield and confusion in the back four.  They pulled it back to 6 – 6 which really is unacceptable.  We were playing great for the 1st 60 minutes and then a 20 minute lack of concentration and total a.w.o.l. from the midfield led to them scoring 4 in that 20 minutes!  Really don’t know what happened there but every time they attacked in this 20 minute spell they looked like scoring!  The 13th goal of the game was going to be very crucial.  We showed character to get it from a header from Craig from a corner – we followed it up with our 8th and that was game over, finishing with another to make it 9!  Jay Lo and Craig did very well up front scoring 7 between them (Jay Lo 4, Craig 3) and the midfield looked very comfortable for 60 minutes.  Just have to learn to kill games off and not have a stupid 20 minute spell like we did!  However, a good display (great 1st half) and so many names for Man of the match – Waller and Paul played very well on the flanks.  Jay Lo and Craig scored 7 – a GFC record (No one has scored a hat-trick wearing the famous blue!), Tom in defence looked solid, Tick and Garth did very well for the majority of the game and Oli probably had his best game ever for GFC and came very close to getting it too – but with 4 goals Jay Lo pips it.  Next time we are 6 – 2 up lets close them down, finish them off and concentrate!

24th Sep 2006 - Stone Quarry 4 v Gatwick FC 3

I could say it was the same old story as ever about yesterday’s performance – stupid mistakes at the back and should have put away the chances up front.  And although this is true, that is where the similarities end.  We have changed as a team and improved drastically from last season.  We looked fluid, moved well, passed well and the chances when they came were well earned and extremely well worked – good passing football.  We deserved to win this game, Craig having two good chances and myself having a good one that we all should have put away plus a penalty that was given and then taken away!  (Centre circle Ron after all!)  That’s not to criticise, as Craig deservedly got two others goals and is awarded Managers Man of The Match but if areas are to be improved then it’s the opposition running through us.  The 1st 20 minutes it was all us and we made this 1st division side look very average so it was a shock when they went 2 up through mistakes at the back.  It shows our mettle that we pulled it back to 2 all before half time – game on.  We took the lead and they equalised and a penalty for us would have won it but they scored with 4 minutes to go!  Annoying we played so well and got nothing from this game but encouraging as at times we played some excellent football – the whole team gelling very well together; from Jay Lo and Tick in the centre to John and Waller out wide, our back four and the two new signings up front (Mark and Craig.)  A good performance and if we eradicate mistakes there is no need why we shouldn’t finish top 2 in our league playing like this.  Simon also kept us in the game in the 1st half.

3rd Sep 2006 League - Crawley Toon 7 v Gatwick FC 2

Hmmm what to say about our first game of the season?  Well things can only get better (I hope!)  This game could have been 7 – 7 but they deserved the victory as they were fitter, more organised and didn’t make the dreadful stupid mistakes at the back that we did.  It has to be said we have defended better as a team than we did on Sunday – some real basic errors gifted them about 4 goals.  There were also gaps in midfield where they could run simply through creating chances and looking organised.  Having said all that, this team where not great and rather we lost the match rather than them winning it, if you see what I mean.  We did have chances up front and instead of messing them up at least they were unlucky not to go in – hit the post, the bar and some great saves from their very average keeper.  We did have some good spells towards the end of the 1st half trailing 3-2 when Tick and Waller imposed themselves with Chappers doing good work also, and in the second half as well but when we let our heads down and lost concentration they racked up the goals from silly errors.  We have to be more organised and hold our positions better and impose ourselves on the game.  We also need to learn to hold the ball and not always look for the killer pass.  The score line greatly flatters them and it wasn’t a totally dreadful performance (we’ve played worse) just one we can build on.  Manager’s man of the match goes to John Chapman who had a superb game.

1st Sep 2006 League - Gatwick FC 4-3 Hurstpierpoint Hasbeens

What a game!  Gatwick showed great fighting skills and character to win a game that we thoroughly deserved.  After conceding 2 soft goals and a fluke third after dominating possession and creating numerous chances it seemed like another one of those days.  No one in the team let their heads drop and through perseverance we got our just rewards.  The main difference in this game as compared to many other games was that we actually passed the ball and helped each other out.  The midfield had options with whom to pass to and our forwards held the ball up very well.  We won the game in midfield, we were first to most second balls and if we weren't players were ensuring that they chased back and made it extra hard for their attacking players.  The defence were a lot more organised this week with Tom holding the line very well.  However, the only reason we could have dropped points was due to soft errors at the back and concentration lapses.  When we went quiet our organisation went slightly downhill and that lead to a few mistakes.  If we can carry on passing the ball in the same way, carry on giving our players options and cut out the errors we can really build on this victory.
My man of the match award goes to Garth, he was a rock in the centre of the park and drove the midfield forward.

I'd also like to thank all those that helped out for the day, considering they don't play for us they gave their all for the full 90mins.  Also thanks to Gaz, you could see he need his ciggie after 90 mins.
